COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.-- The City of Colorado Springs is initiating several transportation improvements projects in the South Nevada Urban Renewal and Ivywild areas beginning in June. The City is coordinating each project to minimize impacts to the community and traveling public; however, to take advantage of the construction season, there will be some overlap in timing of construction.

The public is invited to learn more about the projects and construction phasing.

South Nevada Improvements Project

Construction start:  early June 2019

Anticipated completion:  end of July 2019 (weather dependent)

This project will rebuild the center median on Nevada Avenue between Navajo Street and Ramona Avenue to create left-turn lanes to Navajo Street and the shopping center on the west side of Nevada Avenue. When complete, this segment of Nevada Avenue will include a traffic signal mid-block between Navajo Street and Ramona Avenue.  This project consists of work in and along the median only; however, the inside lanes of Nevada Avenue will be closed in both directions. This may cause traffic congestion and delays. Motorists are strongly advised to take alternate routes when possible. No sidewalks or business accesses will be closed during construction.

South Tejon Roundabout Project

Construction start:  Anticipated following the July 4th holiday

Anticipated completion:  Early 2020 (weather dependent)

The existing intersection of South Tejon Street, Cascade Avenue, Ramona Avenue, and Cheyenne Boulevard currently includes five approaches to a single point. To improve safety, capacity and traffic flow, the City of Colorado Springs is reconstructing the intersection as a modern roundabout. The modern roundabout solution at this signalized intersection will improve operations, reduce travel delay, reduce long-term maintenance costs with the removal of the traffic signal, and carry bicyclists and pedestrians fully through all legs of the intersection. It will also improve traffic operations and enhance the sense of community in compliance with the Ivywild Neighborhood Master Plan and the historic character of the neighborhood.

Cascade Avenue over Cheyenne Run Bridge Replacement Project

Construction start: Late Fall 2019

Anticipated completion: Spring/Summer 2020 (weather dependent)

Originally constructed in 1925, the Cascade Avenue Bridge over Cheyenne Creek in the Ivywild neighborhood has exceeded its design life and is functionally obsolete. Although not structurally deficient, the bridge does not functionally convey motorized or non-motorized traffic safely. The roadway and bridge are not wide enough to accommodate the types of vehicles and traffic it’s expected to carry with today’s criteria. The City of Colorado Springs is replacing the bridge with a similar structure (concrete arch) that will be wide enough to accommodate the current functional needs and provide a crossing of Cheyenne Creek for the next 100 years.

As part of the project, South Cascade Ave. will convert to one-way southbound. The one-way reconfiguration will be from Brookside Street to the Tejon Street Roundabout. During construction we will accommodate northbound traffic on South Cascade Avenue between the roundabout and the bridge over Cheyenne Run. When the current bridge is demolished, assess to the few properties in that area will only be from the south.  At the completion of the project, Cascade Avenue will be one way from Brookside Street southbound to the roundabout.

2C Overlay Projects

Construction start: Early 2020

Anticipated completion:  Fall 2020 (weather dependent)

Upon completion of the South Tejon Street Roundabout and South Cascade Avenue over Cheyenne Run Bridge replacement pre-overlay concrete/asphalt overlay work will take place in two locations in this area:

  •          South Tejon St. (from South Cascade Avenue to Motor Way)
  •          South Cascade Avenue (from Cheyenne Boulevard at the new roundabout to Brookside Street)
