On January 20, 2023, at about 11:33 a.m., officers with the Colorado Springs Police Department were dispatched to investigate a crash at Austin Bluffs Parkway and Rangewood Drive that involved five vehicles. The investigation revealed a white Ford F150 was Northbound on Austin Bluffs Parkway when it shifted into the left turn lanes and failed to stop before striking a blue Honda Civic. The two vehicles then collided with other vehicles in the intersection. The Honda Civic appeared to be stopped waiting to make a left turn onto Rangewood Drive.
American Medical Response transported both drivers of the vehicles to area hospitals with serious injuries. The driver of the Honda Civic died two days later. Speed does appear to be a factor in this crash, and it is unclear at this time if drugs were involved, but alcohol does not appear to be a factor. The investigation is ongoing, and no arrests are pending currently. The Colorado Springs Police Department’s Major Crash Team is handling the investigation due to the nature of the crash. The death of this driver was the first fatal car crash in Colorado Springs in 2023, and there was one fatal car crash this time last year. Wolfgang Lampert, 69 years old and a Colorado Springs resident, has been identified as the victim of the accident.
