Sheriff's Office Investigates Officer Involved Shooting on East Arvada Street
On Friday, May 13, 2022, around 9:50 p.m., the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) Communications Center received a call of a Felony Menacing (weapon display) that occurred in the 200 block of East Arvada Street.
The caller said a man approached him in a parking lot and asked for a ride. When the caller refused to give the man a ride, the man grabbed him and pulled out a knife. The caller was able to break away from the man and call 911.
Officers with the CSPD arrived at the 200 block of East Arvada Avenue looking for the suspect. The suspect walked out of an apartment and started chasing witnesses. He confronted the first arriving officer and began assaulting the officer. The officer fired their duty weapon at least one time toward the suspect.
The suspect took control of the officer's marked patrol vehicle and stole it. The suspect drove away south on East Arvada Street then onto southbound Interstate 25 (I-25). CSPD officers began pursuing the suspect when the suspect crashed into multiple vehicles on I-25. As a result, the vehicle became disabled on south I-25 near South Academy Boulevard where the suspect was apprehended. The suspect was transported to a local hospital, where he was treated for a non-life threatening single gunshot wound.
The suspect has been identified as Osemeke Uwadibie, DOB: 11/26/1990. He is currently in custody at the El Paso County Jail on the charge of First Degree Murder with additional charges pending.
The officer suffered minor injuries and is now on administrative leave per CSPD's department policy.
It was later revealed the apartment where the male suspect walked out of had a homicide victim inside. CSPD's Violent Crime Section will take over the investigation into the homicide and CSPD's Major Crash Team will be handling the investigation into the multiple crashes.
In accordance with Colorado Revised Statute 16-2.5-301, the El Paso County Sheriff's Office is the lead investigative agency for this officer-involved shooting.
