On Friday, November 6, 2020, at approximately 9:48 P.M., an officer with the Colorado Springs Police Department was flagged down by a community member and informed of a motorcycle crash on Oro Blanco Drive near the intersection with Turquoise Circle. Upon the officer’s arrival, it was determined the motorcyclist was seriously injured and first aid was provided by members of the Colorado Springs Fire Department and AMR. The motorcyclist was transported to a nearby hospital where he subsequently died as a result of the injuries he sustained in this crash. The Major Crash Team responded to the scene to assume the investigation into this matter.
It was determined the motorcyclist, 52-year-old Kelvin D. Smith of Colorado Springs, was traveling northbound on Oro Blanco Drive at a high rate of speed when he lost control of his motorcycle and ran off the right side of the road— causing him to be ejected from his motorcycle. It has yet to be determined if impairment of any kind is a factor in the crash.
Mr. Smith is the 41st traffic related fatality in Colorado Springs this year. At this same time in 2019, there were 38 traffic fatalities in the city. Mr. Smith was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. No charges have been filed in this case and the investigation is continuing.
