On April 9, 2021, at approximately 8:23 P.M., The Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) was notified of a three-vehicle crash at the intersection of North Academy Blvd. and Palmer Park Blvd. Upon arrival of officers, it was found that none of the three drivers were complaining of injuries.
The investigation revealed that a Volvo sedan traveling westbound on Palmer Park Blvd. ran a red light and struck a Pontiac sedan, which was northbound on Academy Blvd. The Pontiac was then pushed into a Volkswagen, which was also northbound. The Pontiac and Volkswagen were traveling through the intersection under a green light. The driver of the Volvo was served a ticket for Careless Driving at the scene and subsequently released.
On April 13, 2021, CSPD officers responded to an address in the 2300 block of Heathercrest Dr. in regards to a deceased person. It was discovered that the deceased person was the driver of the Volvo involved in the traffic crash on April 9, 2021. An autopsy was later conducted by the El Paso County Coroner’s Office and it was determined that the Volvo driver died as a result of injuries he had suffered during the crash. The driver’s identity is being withheld pending the notification of the next of kin.
This is the 10th traffic-related death in Colorado Springs in 2021. At this time in 2020, there were five traffic-related fatalities.
