On Wednesday, March 17, 2021, at approximately 12:10 P.M., the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) was notified of a crash in a business parking lot located in the 3100 block of West Colorado Ave. Upon arrival of first responders, a female was found to have suffered serious injuries. She was provided medical assistance by members of the Colorado Springs Fire Department and subsequently transported to a nearby hospital for treatment by AMR. Due to the nature of the crash, the CSPD Major Crash Team responded to the scene to assume the investigation into this incident.
The investigation revealed that the victim, 80-year-old Margaret Stanfill of Manitou Springs, was driving a Jeep SUV when she pulled into a parking space in front of the businesses. As she was exiting the vehicle, it began to roll backwards. Ms. Stanfill was unable to re-enter the vehicle and was run over as it rolled down the small incline. The Jeep then struck another vehicle, which was parked in the parking lot and came to a stop. Ms. Stanfill died a short time later due to the injuries she suffered. Impairment is not suspected.
Ms. Stanfill was the 5th traffic related fatality in Colorado Springs this year. At the same time last year, there were three traffic related fatalities in the city. This investigation is continuing.
