On May 12, 2022, the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) and the Colorado Springs Fire Department (CSFD) received reports of an active fire at the Skylark Mobile Home Park located in the 3800 block of Cascade Avenue. Due to the nature and size of the fire, CSFD issued an evacuation order to those living in the mobile home park. In total, 8 homes were deemed a “total” loss due to the nature of the fire. Approximately 50 personnel from CSPD responded to the fire and assisted with evacuations. Initial information from evacuees was that there was one victim of the fire prior to firefighters and officers arriving on scene. CSFD remained at the location ensuring the fire was completely out until 3:30 P.M. Once the fire was completely out, members of CSPD Violent Crimes section responded and worked in cooperation with CSFD Fire Marshals to investigate what happened. Personnel from CSFD also remained on scene all night to monitor for any hot spots.
Below are the latest updates available regarding this fire:
Fire Investigation
“After an extensive investigation to determine the cause of the fire at 3831 N. Cascade, the only ignition source our fire investigators are not able to rule out is the improper disposal of smoking materials. As a result, this fire will be ruled as accidental,” according to CSFD.
One Confirmed Deceased
One deceased individual was located inside the mobile home where the fire was believed to have originated. That individual’s identity, as well as the official determination of the cause and manner of death, will be determined by the El Paso County Coroner’s Office. Only once next of kin notifications are made will the identity be officially released to the public.
This is still an active investigation by both the CSFD and CSPD.
