From December 6, 2020, through January 11, 2021, a series of various crimes were committed at local businesses and hotels. The crimes included shoplifting, burglary and aggravated robberies. Through their investigative work, detectives from the Colorado Springs Police Department’s (CSPD) Robbery Unit were able to identify a suspect and link these crimes together. Detectives identified the suspect as 38-year-old Colorado Springs resident Alex Sermeno. In some of the cases, Sermeno would distract hotel clerks and empty the cash register. During one of the burglaries, when confronted by the clerk, Sermeno pulled out a handgun and pointed it at them.
On Sunday, January 17, 2021, Sermeno was arrested by the robbery detectives with the assistance of the CSPD’s Tactical Enforcement Unit. Sermeno was charged with the following:
