On August 17, 2021, at approximately 8:23 A.M., the Colorado Springs Police Department’s (CSPD) Communication Center received a report of a dead body at Otis Park located at 731 Iowa Avenue. When CSPD officers arrived at the scene, they located one deceased adult male with obvious trauma. Based on the preliminary investigation, detectives from CSPD’s Homicide Assault Unit responded and assumed responsibility for this investigation.
On Wednesday, August 18, 2021, the El Paso County Coroner’s Office completed the autopsy of the male victim. The victim was identified as 37-year-old Mitchell Arellano of Colorado Springs. While the Coroner’s Office will make the official cause and manner of death determination, this death is being investigated as a homicide and continues to be an active investigation. Further details will be released in the future as appropriate.
Mr. Arellano’s death is the 21st homicide investigation in the City of Colorado Springs in 2021. The CSPD investigated 24 homicides at this time last year.
