On June 2, 2023, at approximately 2:09 p.m., Officers were dispatched to 1500 S. Nevada Avenue. to investigate a shooting. Upon arrival, they located two deceased, adult males inside of a vehicle. Bystanders attempted life-saving efforts on the male seated on the driver’s side of the vehicle, but he had passed away from injuries sustained from being shot. The passenger of the vehicle was deceased and had also been shot. The Colorado Springs Police Department Homicide Unit continued the investigation.
On Monday, June 5, 2023, the El Paso County Coroner’s Office completed the autopsy of the deceased male who was found in the driver seat of the vehicle. He has been identified as 31-year-old Qualin Campbell, a resident of El Paso County. Mr. Campbell’s death is being investigated as a homicide. An autopsy was completed on the male who was seated on the passenger side of the vehicle. He has been identified as 44-year-old David Karels, a resident of Colorado Springs. Mr. Karels’s death is being investigated as a suicide.
This is the 10th homicide in the city of Colorado Springs in 2023. At this time last year, there were 24 homicides.
