On Friday, February 17, 2023, members of the Colorado Springs Police Department, Falcon Division, responded to the area of 3400 Sinton Road regarding a traffic crash involving two police officers. The investigation determined that the officers were responding to a call for service and were headed southbound on Sinton Road. The other vehicle involved was traveling northbound on Sinton Road. The vehicle traveling northbound crossed over the center line of the roadway and struck the first police vehicle head on causing serious bodily injury to the involved officer. Both the officer and the other driver were transported from the scene to a local hospital for treatment of their injuries. The driver of the northbound vehicle was investigated for driving under the influence of alcohol. On March 6, 2023, the driver of the northbound vehicle was arrested and charged with Vehicular Assault DUI, a class four felony. The driver is identified as 28-year-old Colorado Springs resident Alexander Thomas.

On 02/17/23 at 2254 hours, CSPD Officers were responding non-emergent to a burglary in progress call for service in the 3400 block of Sinton Road. The officers were traveling southbound on Sinton Road. Another vehicle was traveling northbound on Sinton Road and veered out of its lane into the lane of the officer’s vehicles. All three vehicles collided, and emergency medical personnel responded to the scene and transported all three drivers to nearby hospitals. The driver of the other vehicle and one of the officers sustained serious, but non-life-threatening injuries as a result of this traffic crash. Based on this information, the Colorado Springs Police Department’s Major Crash Team responded to the scene and assumed responsibility for the investigation. The 3400 block of Sinton Road was closed for several hours while investigators completed their work. Impairment is suspected to be a contributing factor in this investigation.
