City officials, including Mayor John Suthers, along with users and staff of the current Colorado Springs Senior Center, bid the old facility farewell and viewed a video and renderings of the new Senior Center, in an event on Friday, June 2.
“The current building has served our users well for the last 50 years,” Mayor Suthers said. “But we know we need a safer, more accommodating facility for our patrons, and we’re confident we will deliver that within the next two years.”
The new facility increases the available square footage from 17,100 to 23,000 and begins construction later this year. During the celebration, attendees viewed the new facility through a video fly-through.
The City used $8 million in American Rescue Plan Act funds for the project. Construction on the new building is scheduled to start in August 2023 and take 18-24 months.
“We say farewell to this building so we can make way for a new and improved container that will serve the sages in our community for decades to come,” Councilperson Nancy Henjum said. “Thank you to Mayor Suthers for prioritizing some of the ARPA funds to tend to the needs of our Senior Community with a much-needed new building.”
